Transitioning from Arist (Legacy) to Current Arist Teams App

If you are on Arist (Legacy) for Teams, we recommend transitioning to the newest official M365 Arist app. Before reading this help center article, we recommend watching this short overview video of the Arist experience in Microsoft Teams. This video is designed for Microsoft Teams/IT admins and will help you understand why you're taking these integrations steps and how the experience works.

How do I know if I'm on Arist (Legacy)?

To check which version of the application you have, view it in the Teams Admin Center under Manage Apps. If your installed Arist application says "Arist (Legacy)", you are currently using the older version of Arist for Teams.

By following the steps below in order, we can update the app without disruption to the end user experience.

1. Install the current Arist app

As a Teams administrator, click the following link to install the current Arist app for Teams:

https://teams.microsoft.com/l/app/a275d93b-56eb-4362-afd4-4ab8b115c6c6

You will also need to enable it so that Arist can push course content to your users. Please follow the steps in this article to do so.

2. Find existing App Setup Policies referencing Arist

If you initially installed Arist using Microsoft Teams Groups rather than using the typical App Setup Policy approach:

  1. You will need to first identity or create an appropriate M365 Group that mirrors the Teams Group currently using Arist

  2. Then, navigate to App Setup Policies

  3. Select or create an appropriate App Setup Policy

  4. Ensure that the "Arist" application is added under Installed Apps

  5. If desired, add the "Arist" application under Pinned Apps

  6. Save the policy

  7. If not using the Global Setup Policy, you can link the previously identified M365 group to the policy by searching for the "Group Policy Assignment" tab on the App Setup Policies page

  8. Please note that Setup Policy changes can take up to several days to propagate through Teams

For most customers, you will likely have installed Arist (Legacy) via App Setup Policies. To find the App Setup Policies governing "Arist (Legacy)":

  1. In your Teams Admin Center, navigate to App Setup Policies

  2. For each App Setup Policy, including the Global policy, check if "Arist (Legacy)" is listed under Installed Apps or Pinned Apps. If either is true, keep track of the policy for the next step in this article

  3. Next, ensure your M365 Groups also have a corresponding Teams Group

3. Switch Arist references in your App Setup Policies

In the previous step, if you identified that there were no existing App Setup Policies and created one afresh, you may skip this step.

For each of your identified references to Arist in App Setup Policies, simply switch out the current "Arist (Legacy)" to the current "Arist" application. You will see these under the Installed Apps, and Arist (Legacy) may also need to be replaced under Pinned Apps. There is no need to update the assigned groups.

Please note that Setup Policy changes can take up to several days to propagate through Teams.

4. Validate Teams configuration

When setting up the Arist app for Teams, there are some possible complications. For example, App Setup Policies do not always apply equally for all members for your custom group, even when you explicitly assign it. Here are instructions on how to validate.

5. Sync Teams users in Arist Web UI

To keep users synced in Arist, follow these instructions with both Teams and Arist administrator access.

6. Post-install

After your App Setup Policies have propagated and users have been synced, you can now remove access to Arist (Legacy) through the Teams Admin Center. Under Manage Apps, find the Arist (Legacy) app.

Switch "Available to" from "Everyone" to "No one".

You have now successfully migrated to the current version of Arist for Teams.

Will Arist (Legacy) completely disappear for users?

If your users have Arist (Legacy) chat history in the official Teams Chat tab, these will not be automatically deleted. Clicking on the old chat history links will open the Arist (Legacy) app, which will not be available to the users.

However, the same messaging history is also available in the current Arist app, so users will be able to still view the old messages in the current app. If users end up in the Legacy app, they will see this message prompting them to use the updated one:
